Pride was the primary feature of Lady Eleanore in "Lady Eleanore's Mantle. Perhaps Hawthorne had heard the story that Dr. Bentley learned from Susan Ingersoll's mother, that Eleanore Storer came to America to marry her lover. There was a mix-up and she married Hollingworth instead. But, says Bentley, "She preserved her ideas of importance, as she never went abroad in the evening, unless with a servant before, & another behind her" (233).
