The Hawthorne in Salem Website was created and is being maintained by North Shore
Community College with grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and
the Community College Humanities Association. The project is a collaboration with
three Salem museums: The Peabody Essex Museum,
The House of the Seven Gables Historic Site,
and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.
The content for the Website was developed by the project director and faculty
from colleges and high schools in the Boston area in consultation with Hawthorne
scholars and historians. The site was designed and programmed by a multimedia
design team made up of a professional Web designer and programmers. See Credits
for a detailed listing of those involved in this three-year project.
The Hawthorne in Salem Website was made available to the public on September
1, 2002. Although the grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities ended
on May 31, 2003, North Shore Community College will maintain and update the
site, adding content whenever possible. If you have any questions about the

Invitation to All to Add Material to Our Website
In order to expand our Website, we invite anyone who has images, original
documents, or other material which might be appropriate to post on our site,
to email the project director, Terri Whitney, at: twhitney@northshore.edu.
All material must be in the public domain, or you must provide us with the appropriate
permission for posting the material.
Please send images on a zip disk as tif files if possible, or send via email or on a zip disk as jpeg files. We will return the zip disk to you. Please send the disk to: Professor Terri Whitney, Department of English, North Shore Community College, 1 Ferncroft Rd., Danvers, MA 01923. Be sure to include your name, address, email address, phone, and all information on the source and date of the image as well as the necessary permissions.
Invitation to Scholars to Post Papers, Lectures, Articles, and Book Excerpts
on the Website
In the Scholars' Forum section of the Website, we will post papers, lectures, and articles by faculty from around the country. Because we do not have the resources to review material for Web publication, and because we want the posted material to be of high quality, our policy is to post lectures and papers which have been selected for presentation at scholarly conferences, and so reviewed by those equipped to determine the value of that material, or to post articles already published by a journal. If you have such a paper, lecture, or article and wish to have it posted on our Website, please send your name, a short description of your credentials, and the name, location, and date of the conference where your paper or lecture was presented or the journal in which the article was published. If you wish to submit an article which has already been published, please contact the publisher of that journal and ask them to send us permission to reproduce your article on our Website.
In the Critical Commentary section of the Website, we post excerpts from scholarly books on Hawthorne and his work. If you would like us to post excerpts from your book, please send us the excerpt as a Word document, with the title, author, publisher, date of publication, and page(s). Please also indicate what topic and subtopic under which you think your excerpt would best be placed. In addition, please include a one or two sentence introduction to the excerpt indicating how it relates to the subtopic. Also, it is essential that you gain permission from your publisher for this posting and that you have your publisher send us a letter granting that permission. We will be happy to post a link to your publisher's Website; please include in your message to us the URL of your publisher.

Request for Feedback on Use of the Website
In the Explore section of the Website, we post guided activities for students
employing the resources of this Website. These activities were developed by
the faculty from the Boston area who developed the content for the Website and
also by five faculty from around the country who piloted the site in their classrooms.
We would very much like to hear from any teacher or student who makes use of
these activities. We are eager to hear the reaction of all to our site. If you
